Very good writing and character exploration, but the characters are so unlikable that it is frankly nigh unto impossible to care about what happens to them.

Kathryn My sentiments exactly. I never could understand why people loved a book with so much excess dark and emotional goo without any compelling characters to root for. It's well-written, naturally, and a great classic for many good reasons, but I can't bring myself to like it.

Matt Aw, I totally disagree about being indifferent to the characters. I remember getting extremely emotional when I finished this book in high school. Then again, those were emotional days.
