I wanted to like this book...I really did. But sadly I didn't. Gertrude Stein clearly lived a fascinating life and hung around with some amazing literary and artistic minds. And as a piece of literary art, this "Autobiography" is conceptually interesting.

There were definitely some amusing vignettes, but there were also quite a few parts where I was bored by the seemingly endless relating of who they had dinner with and what artist they met and other details of the day-to-day.

Stylistically her use of words conveys that she is more artist than mere writer.

Like I said, I really wanted to like this book. I recognize Stein's importance as a modern artist. But at the end of the day I had to force myself to read the whole book.
