I can't bring myself to read a book like this more than about once a year, but this was a learning experience for me. I'm all about the idea that you want your kids to have a value system and view of themselves that comes from within, rather than living to please (or control) dominant figures in their lives, and I think this book does a good job of teaching that. I'm also all about letting kids learn to fail when it's safe for them so they can learn to be responsible--and learn that I'm on their side.

Some of the writing was a little self righteous and heavy handed for me though, and many of the "Pearl" sections at the end needed only Wally and the Beav to be complete in their idealism.

Here are some of my favorite lines to use with the kiddos:
What do you think about that? What do you plan to do about it?
[Behavior:] is a hassle to my eyeballs (or hurting my ears).
I love you too much to argue with you.
This whining is draining my energy.
Good thinking.
Let me know how that works out for you.
I'll have to think about that [consequence:] and get back to you. Try not to worry about it.
Well, it looks like things are not going well for you right now. When you're ready to talk I'll be glad to listen.

Hopefully writing those out will help me remember to use them. My apologies to anyone who actually reads this boring review.
