This book is, like, ten years old, so all the cool people already read it years ago. Oh well. Even though it's older, prison life has probably not changed too drastically since then, and this story is well-told. Conover takes some chances to discuss the moral and ethical dilemmas of our prison system, of course, but there's also plenty of action. The book reminded me of the years I spent working at the state mental hospital. Not that I worked anywhere as chaotic or violent as Sing Sing (thank heaven), but all the locked doors and the tension he described were eerily familiar. This book, like prison work itself, is not for the faint of heart, though. If you don't want to read about sex and violence, skip it.
