I was really looking forward to this book because I've never really read much about the Civil War, and just recently I've gotten interested in it as a topic. However, this book turned out to be pretty dry and academic. No doubt, the topic is well-researched, and the author makes some interesting claims, etc. But, sorry, I was hoping for more interesting storytelling, and not just a cold analysis of 19th century values and morays. I guess that's why I'll never be president of Harvard (as the author is).
