The book starts off a little slow, initially making me wonder if I could keep reading. However, it picks up quickly and kept me wanting to turn the pages to find out "what the heck"...
It is a good read, and, if you can get past the surreal tie-in event of the main detective's childhood, it is written realistically. By this, I mean, the pieces left from his childhood, his current life, and the case they are working on, do not fall neatly into place. In fact, almost everything is a mess from the 2nd half of the story through to the end.
I can buy into that, even if I don't like it. Happy endings and everything tidied up in the conclusion have their place, and if that's what you'd like to read - you won't find a bunch of it here, at least not relative to this man's childhood.
