I really enjoyed Tana French's "breakout" novel, In the Woods. Her second novel, The Likeness, falls a little short. The story is intriguing... along Donna Tartt's The Secret History, but it builds then falls a bit in the end. There really wasn't much of a build as the clues come together. Additionally, as an Undercover cop (grant it, I have never been undercover), Cassie Maddox makes some decisions that annoy me as a reader: she keeps incredible relevant information to herself and begins to get overly engaged emotionally after being in the house only a short time.

I think the storyline is intriguing--and the characters are of interest--it's just not as strong as her first work--
