YA novel. Author did a good job developing the story and the character of this 16 year old protagonist. On vacation with her mom and step-dad after WWII, she thinks she is falling in love with a handsome young man who has a secret and seems to know her father from the army. But something is not right between her father and this man. Meanwhile, some new friends staying at the hotel are trying to coax the father into business with them. They clearly have a secret too. They have to leave the hotel when it is discovered that they are Jewish (Not in Palm Beach!!) That added a nice historic touch but I wonder if kids in 2009 can even relate to that. It seems so ridiculous now. Anyway, tragedy strikes and the protagonist finds out that nothing and no one is as they seemed.
