I've been told this is contemporary realistic fiction, but it could also be considered historical fiction. In any case, I loved the book! It is a true story about the author's mother, named May who lived in the US most of her life before her parents decided to move her back to Japan after high school. She is lonely there and misses speaking English. She eventually gets a job in a dept store as the English translator for foreign businessmen, and she meets Joseph and they fall in love, get married and enjoy having tea with milk together (as May was brought up in America and Joseph in England). Now I want to read his other books!
