I'm halfway through this magnificent mess, and I must say... WOW. I shouldn't even call it a mess; it's beautifully plotted and all the disparate elements are starting to come together. The city of New Crobuzon is a character as much as any living creature - and WHAT a character it is. Scary, literate, a love story, an examination of prejudice and outcasts and so much more...

I've been paused at the 3/4 point for a while, distracted by another book and hung up on the fact that the story shifted from a tale of a strange world and half-familiar people to purely horror/action, at which point the writing style started to bog down. When describing things, people, places, the tangled prose amazes, but when describing a sequence of events it starts to drag.

Finished it at last. The ending bummed me out. Amazing piece of work, but certainly not perfect.
