Of all the junk I was reading 5th grade through Junior High, I find I have some of the most favorable memories of Robert Cormier. Here was a man who wrote entirely within that distinct no-man's-land of Young Adult Fiction without once softening a blow or talking down to his audience, all the while grasping for Big Ideas about society and self. Or that's how I remember it at least, in retrospect. Certainly, few others were tackling his sort of everyday evil anywhere near so directly.
