A young adolescent boy named Roy Eberhardt moves from Montana to Coconut Cove, Florida, not wanting to leave his home in back in Montana. Roy goes through all kinds of hardships including the school bully, Dana Matherson. One day on the bus, he sees a kid running in bare feet and frantically wants to step out of the bus, but he can’t because Dana is choking Roy so he punches Dana in the nose and breaks his nose. Now Dana has a grudge for Roy. He meets Mullet Fingers and the kid doesn’t want him there so he kicks him out roughly. The next day a girl named Beatrice Leep in the bus talks to him about the boy and tells him he’s her brother. She tells Roy that He is known as Mullet Fingers; who has been pranking a construction site named Mother Paula’s restaurant. If they build on that construction site all the Burrowing Owls will die. Roy tricks Dana to going into the construction site, which is guarded by the patrolman Curly and gets arrested. Mullet Fingers, Roy, and Beatrice try to stop the company from building there, and eventually convince everyone that it is illegal to build in that area. Napoleon Bridger Leep (also known as Mullet Fingers) and Roy become best friends. In the book it said, “He was perfectly content to watch a soccer match that is being played in Quito, Ecuador.” I thought WOW that’s a coincidence. What I liked about this author that Hiaasen can do a very good description of characters. One of the best books I’ve read.
