did not like it

I confess I only read 50 pages of this novel. I had had high hopes for it because a) I usually love to read novels set in any time period of Japanese history, b) I usually love having a strong female character to root for, and c) I thought it would be fascinating to get an inside glimpse at a traditional sake-making family. However, I was disappointed by the pedestrian writing style in this book and I just didn't like or feel curiousity about any of the characters. I respect that other people enjoyed this book, and I admire the author for completing it, but for me, it just wasn't a good read.

Amy pedestrian! That is exactly the word I was looking for in my review.
