The fourth in the Artemis Fowl series has the whole gang coming back. As I've said before, at this point, I'm mainly reading it for the characters, not the plot. This one was probably my least favorite of the series so far. I still enjoyed it a lot but there were more points in the story where I felt like the plot and vilians were cliche. Also, there's A LOT of toilet humor in these books. I feel as though whenever the characters get in a tight spot and Colfer has to decide how to get them out, he goes "Oh yeah, dwarf gas of course!" How Mulch hasn't permanently damaged his digestive tract by now, I have no idea.

Opal had good potential to act as a foil for Artemis's supposed intelligence but Colfer throws that aside and goes for the crazy card. I was really disappointed in that. I'm still interested in the characters and what ultimately happens with them so I'll read the 5th book but I hope its a serious improvement on this one.
