12-year-old Anand lives in a shack in the slums of Kolkata and works for a cruel tea merchant. He copes with his miserable existence by collecting folktales and believing in magic. When a mysterious old man offers to make Anand his assistant on an important and mystical journey, Anand jumps at the chance. Soon Anand discovers that he has the unique power to be the conch bearer – one who carries a magical conch shell back to its home in the secret valley of the Brotherhood, high in the Himalayas. Anand’s journey tests his loyalty, endurance, and obedience and pits him against dangerous creatures. This is a great read for fantasy lovers!
