I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. It's not a bad book, just not one I liked. I tend to like books from the other side of the story - The Red Tent and The Mists of Avalon are two of my favorites. This one, however, took the line of thought that the typically retelling of Dorothy's adventure is not correct. I was annoyed that the author chose to be so liberal with the original story instead of giving the Witch a background that humanized her and explained her actions.

I thoroughly enjoyed the middle of the story, but the beginning and end left much to be desired in my opinion.
