This series is just ridiculously satisfying. Maybe it's that they were released serially, and Hugh Howey knows he has to hook readers like me in and give us some quick wins and major plot payoffs in each novella to keep us going. Maybe he's tapped into what pulp fiction writers have long known.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. My 21st century attention span loves the quick pace and every single satisfying plot twist and payoff. My inner English major thinks Howey is brilliant and makes nuanced and subtle character development seem effortless.

I am a little embarrassed it took me until this book to be like, "oh, WOOL! gauges! casting off! the suits! the mayor! the cleaning! the layers of cleverness!" Oh well.

If you're in doubt, READ THIS SERIES. I can't spare the time to write a better review because I have to get started on Wool #4.
