Fascinating to learn about the lives of the first generation of freed African Americans. The hopes and struggles of their parents, and the infuence on their own lives and the lives of their descendants. At first I found the author's interwoven personal story a bit of an annoying distraction from the personal histories of the interviewees, until I found out about the connection between their stories and her own. Tearjerker.
