I really wasn't a big fan of this book. A good friend recommended it to me when, for all intents and purposes, I lost my job. There were aspects of it I appreciated -- good writing, thoughtful prose. But then... at times I felt like he was writing with considerable arrogance, berating and belittling all who disagree with his sensibilities. For instance, he criticizes tourists who travel, camera in hand, with more thought to preserving a memory than experiencing the moment. Fair enough. Except, he does a similar thing with his writing. He is judgmental concerning people more interested in arriving at their destination, rather than appreciating and enjoying the journey. Here's the thing, though. Not everyone can just up an drop out of their live in the interest of a journey. It took me forever to get through this book. After a while, however, it was personal.

AngelaGay Kinkead Good points, but I have to admit that I read it in 1986 and at the time, I had never read a travel memoir and had such wanderlust that it pushed lots of my buttons! Reliving childhood vacations in the 60's/early 70's and setting my sites on places that I'm still trying to get to.
