I forget which news outlet first reported that the city of Detroit had become a dumping ground for the bodies of homicide victims from other areas and a wasteland of abandoned properties, but I remember saying "Huh, what?!"

Somehow, I had missed the massive decline of this storied and iconic American city. Mark Binelli's book on Detroit's powerful past, painful present, and questionable future filled in a lot of the blanks for me. Binelli looks at social, economic, and political causes/effects without bogging down the casual reader (I think that's me) in the academia of urban planning.

Informative and interesting, in equal measure, Binelli's book has me waiting for Detroit's next chapter.
