This book had painful scenes from life in New York in the 19th century, and then a bizarre alternative future of New York. Both were interesting, but the plot was vague, and I was never sure really what the motivation of any of the characters were. The stories were pretty. I liked the alternative universe.

Ultimately the depictions from old New York were okay, but i've read better historical fiction, plot wise, with more interesting use of the historical details, and the future New York was just average.

For the real old New York, read Luc Sante's Low Life, and there are a few other novels I should go find a rate.
