The sociological history of the ancient peoples was interesting and helps to understand the context of the Old Testament events. It is one thing to explain what the surrounding cultures or predominant belief systems were at the time, if the Bible does not; but I couldn't understand the point of explaining away (what I would refer to as) God's miracles; it seems to me that the biblical accounts are either true or not (whether they can be rationalized or not).
