This book turned out to be 80% historical fiction and 20% novel. I like the Civil War history, so I didn't mind too much. Each chapter alternated between a variety of characters telling their own experiences either in the Civil War or in modern day among Civil War reenactors. It was a bit jumbled, and the story really didn't rise to any notable climax. The author always likes to throw in a ghost or even a group of ghosts to make her stories a bit more spooky.

All in all, I learned a bit more about the Civil War in the North Carolina/Tennessee area and reinforced my opinion that war is generally bad for everyone involved. It brings out the worst in people and destroys innocent lives.
