McPherson's offering on Lincoln as commander in chief is thorough and sound but, as someone who has read quite a lot about Lincoln, I found myself wanting more. Especially during the early chapters, I felt that much of this ground had been covered before, and wished instead that the author had focused on a more analytical approach. I thought Perret's 2004 book, Lincoln's War, a more interesting take on Lincoln's (amazing) abilities as commander in chief. McPherson is a great scholar and writer, so perhaps my high expectations are causing me to be a little harsh.
