** spoiler alert ** This was a sweet book in a Beaches sort of way (yes, I mean the "did you ever know that you're my hero" Beaches). It is the touching tale of two best friends, Tully and Kate, who both admire and envy each other's lives from the beginning. Tully is abandoned by her hippie mother, which makes her an adventurous free-spirited attention-grabber for most of her life. Kate has a seemingly perfect family, all of whom become Tully's family over time as well.

Tully dreams of being a news anchor and finally makes it big, becoming a super wealthy household name adored by the public. Kate marries, has three kids, and becomes a stay at home mom. While Kate is jealous of Tully's perfect appearance and feels like she has lived her whole life in Tully's shadow, Tully is also envious of Kate's family and wants them as her own. When Kate gets cancer, Tully helps her get through the end as they've done everything else in their lives- side by side.
