India with the carpet jerked out from beneath its feet, so it flails ungainly and falls in its own filth. And no one laughs. That said, this story has an odd (and pleasant) light touch. But I kept thinking that A Fine Balance was finer. Lo and behold both are read by John Lee, who does a lovely Hindi accent (and even the Indian-who-has-gone-to-American-and-come-back accent).

Does anybody feel like you don't really know how or when or even why Balram Halwai came to his decision? That what's puzzling me -- but it's what gives this book a slight monotone. Still, the images of the Dark and the Light side were compelling.
