I liked the last three stories a lot more than the preceding six. In fact I've already pretty much forgotten what happens in the first six stories. I picked this up because of a rapturous blurb by Ben Marcus (a writer I love) comparing Wells Tower to George Saunders (a writer I love) and Barry Hannah (a writer I love). These stories never rose to the level of those wonderful writers, for me. Tower doesn't have nearly as distinctive or impressive a voice as those guys, but he does show some promise, especially in those last three stories (especially especially in the one about vikings). So I'm not buying into the hype yet, but maybe his next collection will convert me all the way.
