I am not sure what to make of this one. A good word to describe how I feel about the characters would be "nothing". I see the cleverness of the book within a book idea, and the way in which Jessie steps out of the pages of the inner book to comfort Ruben in her loss, but I found the speech style too difficult and the language too candid and stark. Pet names for menstrual blood and how Ruben's breasts hung during sex - I just don't see how these are these really relevant to a storyline about a long friendship and the type of language used when it deviated into these areas seemed so abrupt and harsh. I didn't feel like I was satisfied by reading this book and I don't really want to recommend it to anyone.
