I came to this book after watching the film with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore. While I enjoyed the film (and the period costumes) the book by Graham Greene is the true masterpiece. This book introduced me to him, and he now one of my favorite writers.
The book follows a couple involved in an adulterous affair. When she inexplicably ends the affair, he is torn up by jealousy, and is determined to find out why.
I can't explain the plot much better than that, but Greene is very much concerned with spiritual themes, which adds an interesting dynamic to his novels.
My favorite scene in the book, which I find to be particularly effective, is when our protagonist pictures his ex-loved dead, lying in Jesus' arms. He believes his fight to be between himself as the lover, and the religion that she subscribes to. He knows deep down that even if he is able to convince her to return to him, that in the end (as in, when she dies) she will leave him forever to be with ...more
