Set in 1946, just after WWII, this book starts out as a charming piece of fluff. Although an epistolary novel, it has an overriding narrative voice that is witty, whimsical, and very English, largely due to the voice of the protagonist, Juliet Ashton. As the book progresses, it becomes clear that it is a book about community and about the recent occupation of the island of Guernsey by the Nazis. At that point, the book ceases to be simply a bit of fluff, despite the fact that the subject is addressed with the utmost gentleness and warmth. I loved it.
