I loved Mayle's "A Year in Provence" and its follow-ups, but this is the first of his novels that I've read. As People magazine says, "Mayle makes Provence sound like the most enticing place this side of paradise." - "A Year in Provence" made me want to visit, and this novel made me want to go back.
A good story, that is being made into a film by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. Might have to see that one, when it comes out. Mayle knows how to draw characters, and this book contains some gems of description. My only dissatisfaction was with the storytelling, and yet my dissatisfaction is so vague I cannot quite name it, except to say that at times events felt convenient, and the climax was not as exciting or danger-filled as I had hoped. Nonetheless, I'm not sorry I bought the book.
