This book has left me with little more choice of words other than mystifying, heart-breaking, astounding, and genius. I'm glad I read it after taking a few undergrad humanities courses but before I was old enough to completely distance myself from the main characters. The book gripped me, and, as I'm known to make hyperbolic statements every now and then, I would like to say that it affected my life. Tremendously. Donna Tartt is an inspiration, and not just that. Her writing is horrifyingly beautiful, tinged with a sense of humor I wish I encounted more often in the real world.

Quotes Liana Liked

Donna Tartt
“Beauty is rarely soft or consolatory. Quite the contrary. Genuine beauty is always quite alarming.”
Donna Tartt, The Secret History

Donna Tartt
“Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,' that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does. And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.”
Donna Tartt, The Secret History

Terri wow-great review. what is the premise of the book?

Liana It's just about some New England college students that are embroiled in a murder. But the writing is SO good.
