A survey of the current academic points of interest around the study of the evolution of language. While her writing isn't the most coherent--she tends to jump around--this is an interesting book.
First, Kenneally describes how the evolution of language was a forbidden topic (rather strange, actually, but those academics are that if nothing else!) and then it wasn't considered important in the face of Noam Chomsky's theories of language. She describes his work, its codification, and then attempts to address the challenges to it. Many linguists and others are nibbling at Chomsky's theories through animal study (mostly in the wild, but a lot in captivity and it annoyed me that no mention of whether this was ethical was even brought up), current brain studies, and more.
She outlines a field, or fields, constantly breaking new ground and offering up many avenues of study--all in the attempt to discover how us crazy humans started talking.
