The book took me forever to finish. It had fascinating potential with a villain like Drood, but Drood is always in the wings and rarely allowed center stage. I think my distaste has less to do with the sub-plots, sub-sub-plots, and the blind alleys that permeated the 770 plus pages than the fact that I was unsympathetic toward the main character. The arc of the story involved Charles Dickens' life and death. I didn't give a hoot about what happened to Wilkie Collins. He was pathetic from start to finish. There is a section in the book where Dickens goes to American on a reading tour. The story drags at an even slower pace. I rest my case.
