One thing I find that is different about this author's historical fiction is that the characters usually possess a little more depth than you usually find in period pieces. Yes, there were some tried and true plot devices here, but Carlyle puts her own twist on them and I find the result very satisfying. I thought this particular story ran a little long but it was not a chore to put in the extra time. Tristan was a charming anti-hero and Phaedra was an intelligent heroine who did not feel superior to everyone.
I don't read nearly as much historical fiction as I did back in the day but Carlyle will remain on my short list of writers whose books I will still set aside time for and appreciate.
