Gotham City's greatest hero - the mysterious Batman - has been retired for ten years, and crime is at an all-time high. His sudden return sparks controversy and rebellion as he battles some of his oldest foes - Two-Face and the Joker, both newly released from Arkham Asylum. Miller's art is fantastic, although the Joker looks a little too feminine for my tastes. I also liked the new Robin - I've always wondered why Robin was always a boy and never a girl. The only real problem I had with her was that they didn't give her enough backstory; she's just this girl who puts on the costume and randomly joins Batman. You need to have some knowledge of the DC universe to get "The Dark Knight Returns"; you at least need to know who's in the Justice League and who's in Batman's Rogue Gallery, but it's not complicated.
"The Dark Knight Returns" is an excellent read.
