I had high hopes for this book: a wonderful and eccentric bookstore in New York filled with interesting and unusual characters, a missing manuscript by Herman Melville, and a young girl swept up by her love of books. Alas... The main character, Rosemary, drifts through the whole book and I didn't really get to know her, and as a result, I didn't really like her. I thought her relationship with Oscar was unhealthy and her relationship with Walter was bizarre. And I saw the "twist" coming a mile away.

Though the book was less a mystery about a missing Melville manuscript than I had anticipated, it did have a strong theme about being lost and found. That, and the the fact that the language in the book was quite beautiful and lyrical pushed it into two-star range for me. Maybe two-and-a-half.
