Read in April, 2009

This was an enjoyable, though dense, book about two black women, Nel and Sula, who grow up in Ohio. The story stretches from 1920 to 1965. The title character becomes a pariah by being spirited and libertine.

The book is separated into two parts. The first part, which takes place in the 1920's when the two characters are adolescents, is better than the second half.

Overall, though, the book is lyrical and enjoyable and good if you're looking for an intellectually challenging book.
