On books as old friends: "The other copy [of Brillat-Savarin's The Physiology of Taste:] is the one I would keep, if I had to choose. It is smaller, printed in Paris in 1838, and very ugly, maroon, blue, and blotched inside like an old man's cheek. But it has a good smell, a good feel, and whenever I find myself bored or cross or stuffy, I read a little from it and am well."

Also the essay "Love in a Dish"

Even though I didn't get to read all the essays before I got buried underneath the rest of my library stack, I'm rating this b/c I loved them all. Luckily, my mother had a compilation edition of five of her other books, which I will keep on hand to peruse at will. Can't wait to read more. She makes me feel elegant, practical, and cozy - all at the same time. And hungry.
