Thomas's review
Republic
by Plato
It may seem pretentious to read this book three times, but perhaps you might think about reading it twice. There is no dialogue in it between Aristotle and Socrates. Aristotle was Plato's student, not Socrates's.
What were the crossovers and differences you found between Plato and Washington?
Did you think Plato's Republic would be one you would like to live in?
What colour soul do you think you would have ended up with if you lived in such a republic?
Did you enjoy the story of the Cave?
Do you think children should be educated in common?
Did you come away from reading the book thinking that the just man was happier than the unjust man?
I enjoyed your commentary. I don't think you're pretentious... maybe a little red neck with all the motorcycle stuff... does that make me pretentious?

This seemed like an appropriate book to read in the new milleneium. So I did. It was interesting. Some say it is the template for socialism.
Some say it is the template for democracy.
People say lots of things about it.
The concept of reading Plato's Republic is pretentious.
So I admit it- I'm at times such a little snot.
Some idjut on NPR said the other day that Plato's Republic was just sooooooooooooo much more enlightening after the third reading! :-o If only everyone would give Socrates & Aristotle a third go-around!
After hearing that I think it is a fairly conceited, elitist and self-absorbed thing to admit to having read this. I will... but only because I've already listed half a dozen motorcycle books along for the ride. And that guy on NPR made me laugh my head off.
I thought that Plato's Republic was kind of an expansion of codes given to people by the likes of Moses, Hammurabi, etc.
It is surprising to read thru the book and come across i...more
