Elizabeth I've never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell -- have you read her before? What is she like?

Amy I wrote this about her in my blog last night,
"Just finished the BBC Wives and Daughters miniseries starring Francesca Annis, otherwise known as Lady Jessica in the 80s version of Dune. Loved it. I also loved the miniseries based on Elizabeth Gaskell's other novel North and South. I should really get to reading some of Gaskell's books, as the only one of hers I have read was Mary Barton, which was assigned reading in a history course at DePauw. Except for Mary Barton, Gaskell's novels strike me as Austen-esque ... but more down-to-earth and better representative of England in the mid 19th century. Lots of interesting class and industrial stuff, plus romantic and genteel aspects like you find in Jane Austen's work. I may indeed prefer Gaskell as I find her work more balanced and therefore more interesting and approachable. "
