I read this book a long time ago when I was younger. I decided to read it again to refresh my memory of this story. I wanted to see if I could use it in my classroom. It is an amazing story about a young boy who runs away and makes a life on a mountain. It is impressive how smart he is and is able to use natural resources from the land to survive. It just shows how much we take for granted and what a huge importance nature is. I cannot believe that people used to live that way. It proves that we have become so accustomed and dependent on material things. I have some same experiences and revelations as he did in the story from my trips to the Boundary Waters. However, it was never at his extreme level of wilderness living. It makes you appreciate what you have and the beauty of nature. Everyone should read this story if you have not already.

Caroline Have you ever read "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen?

Gretchen It looks familiar, but I don't think I have ever read it. Steve says he has and that it is really good.
