really liked it

This is a dark first contact story. The gold standard in first contact story for me used to be The Mote in God's Eye. I would have to say this is now my new gold standard. This book falls in the hard sci-fi genre. Diamond hard for sure. Some people may find all the techno lingo a bit off-putting. If you're a fan of hard sci-fi then you'll love it.

The aliens in this book are so utterly alien in both biology and psychology as to be almost incomprehensible. It raises some interesting questions about the nature of intelligence and self-awareness.

The one thing I didn't like about the book was the constant flashbacks and asides. I found that it distracted from the flow of the narrative. Although I have to say some of the asides were interesting enough to be full stories in their own right. For instance, the discovery of the vampire genes in the human genome would have made a nice story.
