I find the characters in this book fascinating, even those I didn't like. My favorite characters were Spartacus and Varinia, and later Gracchus, who helps Varinia to freedom. I love that Varinia escapes to freedom, and with her son (I was so afraid he would be killed or taken from her) ... what a wonderful and surprising ending. It was surprising and interesting that Gracchus kills himself in the end too. Overall, a book I could hardly put down, even though much of the subject matter was so distressing.
