very good history of cochineal. It is hard for someone living in the modern age of easily available, brightly dyed, colorfast fabrics to conceive of a simple dye being worth more than its weight in gold. Greenfield traces the history of the search for a brilliant red dye through the late Medieval to modern times. A story filled with intrigue, secrecy, conquest, scientific and technological developments. Very well paced.
