This was similar to the first novel, but disappointingly, the stakes were lower. The other novel was about saving an entire city and the time frame was centered around Hurricane Katrina. This book was more of a detective story centered around poisoned river water and a couple of murders. The mermen were new characters and that was interesting, but I guess I was looking for a bit more of a payoff. Nothing really wrong with it, but looking for something more like before. Also three years have passed since the previous novel. That seems like a long time with nothing going on in the series. Even the relationships between the characters seems to not have changed much in all that time. Overall, I'm rating the book a three. If you liked the first novel in the series, you will like this one, just don't set your expectations too high like I did.
