Brandy's review
The Basic Eight: A Novel
by Daniel Handler
I have his book "Adverbs" and still haven't read it. I did like the first few pages (which I did read), so I don't know why I haven't read the rest of it.
Adverbs was great; you should pick it up again. (I'm not logging it because I read it last year.) Basic Eight would have gotten a fifth star if not for the similarity of the ending to another book. (And I shall say no more, or risk ruining this fantastic title!)
I've been trying to get Adverbs from the library, but it's always checked out. WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED that colleges contain Daniel Handler fans?
If I hadn't gotten my copy from the public library, I'd loan it to you. Alas! 'Tis not to be! (Do you have any kind of reserve list you could try?)
There's a reserve list, but I'm loath to use it because I give everyone else the benefit of the doubt that they're using it for academic purposes, wheras I just want to read for fun. Of course, there are times when it's almost definitely *not* for academic purposes, like the time someone recalled a book on beer trivia I was reading, but I guess I'm not comfortable enough to abuse the system quite yet.
Summer, you can have my and Chris's copy of "Adverbs" -- I'll mail it to you if you email me your address. We didn't like it, and it'd be good for it to have a good home.
I had a meeting in another library today and I found a copy! But thank you for the offer.
This library also shelves the Snicket books under Handler. I'm not sure how I think about that.

This book was good--a fairly quick, engrossing read. I'm hesitant to say too much about the plot, as it was very reminiscent of another book--but to mention the title will totally ruin The Basic Eight, so you're best off just reading it for itself, and waiting until you're finished to put it down and rant, "That was just like ______________!"
In fact, the ending is why I only gave it 4 stars, instead of the 5 I was thinking it deserved until that point.
