really liked it
bookshelves: kids-books

If you've ever asked yourself "What would the Harry Potter books be like if they were written by a professional author?" then this is your series. Especially in this first book, Brandon really makes the parallels apparent. See if this sounds familiar:

A young wizard (of sorts...) is raised in foster care, never knowing that he was special, but always feeling like he didn't belong. One day an old, bearded wizard comes to save him from his foster family and take him to a magical world, where it turns out that he is part of a very powerful and famous magical family. etc.

Now, before I hear anybody saying Brandon ripped off Harry Potter, let me give you my summary of Star Wars: A young wizard Jedi is raised in foster care, never knowing that he is special...
And Lord of the Rings: A young man living in foster care (with his uncle) is unaware of the magical world around him until a wise old wizard comes to his door to...

So, long story short, Brandon Sanderson took a great, tried and true story and made it great. His magic system is fun enough for kids, and interesting enough (and internally consistent enough) for parents to enjoy.
