A book about growing up without parents, about friendships and relationships and loss and grieving. It has car crashes, "war" between cadets, townies and students, mysterious boys in trees, and other intriguing details. It took me a while to get into it, because there are a lot of characters to keep track of, both in present day and in a novel manuscript that the main character is reading. So you might want to have a scorecard handy. But it's totally worth it, as the characters start to intertwine and the levels of story get deeper. There are a lot of twists and surprises, and plenty of emotion. A really unique book. Winner of the Printz Award 2009.
