I found myself repeatedly shocked that this is a YA novel. Don't let the "YA" tag prevent you from reading this book.

I got to know and love a lot of friendly, resilient and imperfect souls in the course of reading this book. It took me a while to finish, which I didn't mind, because each day I read it I got to spend some time with some incredible people. I will really miss Liesel Meminger and her personal romeo, Rudy Steiner, and her kind and welcoming foster parents the Hubermanns. I will miss the mayor's sad wife and clumsy, deaf Tommy Muller. I will carry a torch for Max and raise a defiant fist in his honor. I will shiver on the banks of the Amper and kick the dirt of the Himmel St. soccer field underneath my feet. I will hide from the gestapo and read during the air raids. I will savor the taste of stolen apples and the memory of stolen words.

That is all just a taste of the life you will feel you are living through these characters. Part 10 was devastating, and beautiful, and if you can stop the tears from flowing, you are a tougher person than I am, undoubtedly.

Death as the narrator was not impressing me much, but the end of the book came together with such beautiful imagery, it could be forgiven.
